Sweet and Sour Sauce

Remember my post about McDonalds sauces? Well, I made my own sweet and sour sauce the other day. The recipe I used is below. I did some extensive research on the topic before I made it. I was positive there was some spice in it that wasn't in any of the recipes that I found. In fact, every recipe on every site I went to had the same exact recipe (with no secret spice). I finally relented and tried it, and guess what? It tasted exactly like McDonalds sweet and sour sauce. Turns out, the secret ingredient is mustard. Who knew? The only change I made to the recipe (which altered the consistency a bit, but didn't compromise the flavor) was the corn syrup. I didn't have any (see the video below) so I put 1 tablespoon of brown sugar instead.

I happened to have a pack of McDonalds sweet and sour sauce to compare it to and it was very close. I made everyone try it. They agreed that mine was thinner in consistency but tasted better than the McDonalds one. After I annoyed everyone and got their fingers all sticky, I put the rest over some pork tenderloin that I seared in a pan and finished in the oven. Served it over some red quinoa and broccoli. So Yum.

McDonalds Sweet and Sour Sauce

1/4 cup peach preserves
1/4 cup apricot preserves
2 tablespoons light corn syrup
5 teaspoons white vinegar
1 1/2 teaspoons corn starch
1/2 teaspoon soy sauce
1/2 teaspoon yellow mustard
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
2 tablespoons water

1. Combine all ingredients except the water in a food processor or a
blender and puree until the mixture is smooth.
2. Pour mixture into a small saucepan over medium heat. Add water, stir,
and bring mixture to a boil. Allow it to boil for five minutes,
stirring often. When the sauce has thickened, remove it from the heat
and let it cool. Store sauce in a covered container in the refrigerator.
Makes about 3/4 cup.
